Where Hawkins Jail Releases Go

Confirm Hawkins County Jail Releases

Hawkins Jail Custody Snapshot
The January 31, 2025 TDOC jail summary reported 260 people against 266 beds at Hawkins County Jail, or 97.7% occupancy. The one-day count included 53 TDOC backup prisoners, 13 local felons, 59 convicted misdemeanants, 101 pretrial felony detainees, and 34 pretrial misdemeanor detainees. The combined pretrial categories represented 51.9% of that dated population.
These are snapshot figures only. They do not measure annual bookings, yearly releases, average time in custody, or how quickly a record updates. A busy and varied population can change through local release, court action, and transfer. None of the totals can verify the status of a named person.
The categories also reinforce why the search path must follow the person’s legal system. A short local booking may never appear in FOIL. Hawkins Jail Transfers to TDOC
Tennessee’s FY 2024–25 Hawkins County analysis reported 80 TDOC backup felons and $1,228,300 in state expenditure for locally held state inmates. This is a county-specific dual-system trap. Physical location at Hawkins County Jail does not mean the person belongs only to a county case or that a later disappearance from local custody is a release.
If TDOC transports the person to a state institution, custody continues. Search FOIL and read Supervision Status with Assigned Location. An incarcerated status or prison assignment supports a transfer to continued state confinement. A Parole status read with a community-supervision assignment supports release from confinement to supervision, though the sentence has not expired merely because the person is out of prison.
The local record may close a booking with language that includes the word released even when the destination is TDOC. Translate the event accurately. “Released to TDOC” means transferred into state custody, not released to the community. When a destination code is unclear, ask the Sheriff for the definition and verify the receiving location through TDOC.
